Winter Weather Are You Prepared?

As winter comes upon one question comes to mind, are we ready for when the temperatures get bellow freezing. Most systems have a freeze protection built in to run pool systems anytime the water gets bellow 34-38 degree.

A few things to check when the temps are dropping.....

• Water level at appropriate level, in most pools this is half way up the tile. This will ensure the system runs when the temperatures drop. Letting the water level go bellow the skimmer will stop the system from running correctly. With no water moving through the pipes there is less protection from the cold temperatures.

• Is the pool running? Its a good idea to check that the pool pump is running if the system is set to run only at night. Many times a breaker can trip, a motor can stop working, or there would be a power issue that is not caught until its too late! Checking that the pump is coming on is vital before a deep freeze.

• Are all my valves open that need to be? Many times a valve is closed for a variety of reasons. Low water, vacuuming pool, turning on or off a certain feature of the pool. Trapped water is very dangerous during a deep freeze. Ensuring all valves that should be open are open will prevent any cracked or damaged pipes during a deep freeze.

If for any reason the power goes out or a pump fails during a deep freeze there are a few steps to prevent costly repairs.

Placing a blanket or tarp over all pool equipment this will help keep the wind chill off of the system as well as trapping any heat from the ground.

Removing the lid from the pool pump, opening any air bleeds from the system and removing plugs from heaters, pumps and filters. This will drain any excess water from the system and allow for expansion of any trapped water. Be sure to turn off any breakers so when the power comes back on the system does not come on before reversing the winterization procedures.
